Ammonia on board
"The most efficient ammonia to power solution"
Onboard ammonia cracker
To decarbonize the maritime sector, the ammonia industry must reduce ship fuel consumption despite the expanding ammonia ship fleet. Additionally, it necessitates replacing power systems with decarbonized or low-emission fuels like green ammonia fuel. This shift applies not only to new vessels but also requires retrofitting existing ones to comply with regulations.
Ammonia provides nearly double the energy density of liquid hydrogen, even at milder storage conditions (-33ºC for ammonia energy compared to -253ºC for LH2). H2SITE efficiently reacts with ammonia, separating hydrogen of molecules of ammonia in a single step, operating at lower temperatures and eliminating the need for a second ammonia cracking process. Overall, H2SITE’s ammonia cracking efficiency is 90 %, making it the most efficient solution in the market for ammonia cracking, ammonia transport and ammonia shipping.
In addition, H2SITE membranes can also be integrated in WGS reactors after methanol reformers to provide maximum CO conversion and hydrogen of the highest purity in compact systems.
Membrane reactors solutions for cracking of ammonia are versatile in terms of flow, feedstock and working conditions. The use of an ammonia cracker onboard ensures efficient ammonia cracking to hydrogen process, making it process more viable and environmentally friendly. This is key in four-stroke engines in which the reaction need to be fast, but will also help with emissions and efficiency control for two-stroke ICEs.
Ammonia to Hydrogen fuel cell
On-demand hydrogen production from ammonia for fuel cell supply. Achieving optimal system efficiency results in a smaller footprint, to eliminate the CO2 emissions. The use of green ammonia in fuel cells ensures a sustainable and efficient power source.
ICE retrofitting
Mixing hydrogen and ammonia in an internal combustion engine allows utilization of the vessel’s power unit throughout its life cycle, ensuring compliance with stringent emissions regulations. This approach leverages the benefits of ammonia cracking process and ammonia density to enhance engine performance and sustainability.
H2SITE unique technology offer flexible onboard ammonia cracking process for main power and auxiliary power units, working both with ammonia and methanol feedstocks achieving the highest efficiency to ensure low consumption of ship fuel and reduced footprint. These innovations in ammonia transport and ammonia shipping technologies support the transition to greener maritime operations in the cracking of ammonia.
