Ammonia Cracking for Industry and Mobility
Funding: Fast Track Innobideak
The main objective of this project has been to further develop and experimentally validate H2SITE’s ammonia cracking (cracker) system, while progressively advancing its marinization for onboard and port applications.
During the project, multiple continuous-operation tests were carried out using the ammonia cracker developed within the H2OCEAN project, whose design is specifically tailored for integration into maritime environments. In parallel, functional tests were performed on an ammonia burner, a key technology for enabling the marinization of the system by providing the heat required for the ammonia cracking process.
The burner was tested under representative operating conditions, validating its performance and generating valuable insights that have been incorporated into the design of a new generation of ammonia burners. This next-generation solution is intended for integration into higher-capacity ammonia cracking systems, targeting hydrogen production rates of approximately 1 tonne of hydrogen per day—a scale that enables the first commercial deployment opportunities.
